Hot Work
What is Hot Work?
Any work using open flames, producing sparks, or sources of heat that could ignite materials in the work area.
Examples: welding, burning, brazing, soldering, grinding metals
Permits are required for hot work in existing facilities, in areas with heavy fire load, or when life safety issues arise. (ARCO hot work permits can be found on ARCOnnect).
Before Hot Work
- Fire protection is inspected and working in the area
- Employees involved must have proper training!
- No combustibles within 35 ft of hot work being performed
- If combustibles cannot be moved, they will be covered with fire retardant tarps or shielded by non-combustible materials
- All wall floor openings shielded
- Area wet down (except when arc welding)
- Anything than can burn must be removed from immediate work area
During Hot Work
- Trained fire watch stationed on site, in adjacent areas, and on lower levels with firefighting equipment as required.
- All personnel must be wearing appropriate PPE
After Hot Work
- Fire watch to patrol the area for a minimum of 60 minutes continuously after the job is finished for permit required hot work.
- Keep permit posted
