Impalement Protection

All rebar on ARCO job sites must be protected from providing an
impalement hazard. This can be done many different ways.

Rebar “caps” are one of the most common ways of providing protection to workers. It prevents a worker that falls on rebar from being impaled on it. Not to be confused with “bump” caps, which are usually round, or “mushroom” shaped. Bump caps are used for rebar that is horizontal and can cause injuries by scratching the legs, body, arms or the impaling the eyes if they are at eye level. (see examples left)
If rebar caps are not available there are other ways to mitigate the hazard. Rebar can simply be bent in a downward direction so that there is no impalement hazard.
Rebar can be tied together so that it forms a /\ . This can also prevent someone from being impaled if they were to fall on it.
The last way that is also common in the industry is trying rebar to 2×4 wood boards, so that again, if a worker was to fall on it, it would prevent impalement.
